the ancient olive groves that characterize the territory from which you
get a valuable oil of excellent quality, where today there are forests
of alder, beech, chestnut and Mediterranean vegetation, once there was a
lot of cherry trees ( Cerarsus in Latin) from which some scholars believe the town derives its current name.
The
place where there is significant geographical importance Ceraso, along
the ancient "Via del Sale" Veline routes linking the Ionian coast, is
instead assumed that the modern name of the site, derived from the greek
word Cherànnumi (link), meaning Ceraso precisely as an ideal point of junction on the road between the sea and the interior of the region.
Ceraso
bases its economy on oil production, wine, chestnuts and fruits in
season, but the beauty of nature around him, the views offered by alleys
that branch out radially from the main square and around the church of
St. Nicholas of Bari ,
old town core, together with the growing range of accommodation, with
the opening of cottages, bed and breakfasts, make Ceraso a tourist
destination for much enlivened by a calendar of folklore and gastronomic
very rich and interesting. During
the summer, are held in villages in and Ceraso fairs and festivals,
such as the Olive Oil Festival "promoting the core product of the
Mediterranean diet with musical events and tasting of traditional food
Cilento.
Around Ceraso
In
the hilly territories around Ceraso, along the river called Palistro,
and the ancient streets Veline and salt, are the four villages. Starting
from the capital, in less than three kilometers to the south meets
Santa Barbara, the most populous locality, existing as a church in 977
and the monastery of Greek monks, from Velia since 1055. Here,
in the first days of August, there is the "Festa dei Rioni", a show
dedicated to the rural world and ancient crafts, developed along a path
traveling between the districts of the town gates and the discovery of
ancient palaces and tasting of products Typical. Massascusa, less than two kilometers east of the capital, is considered the first town in the area. It seems that after the destruction of Velia, groups of refugees fled here. In
the early '900, however, employment at the factory tanning extracts,
led by Antonio and Giovanni Ravera, put that brake emigration depopulated
the Cilento.
Less
than a mile from here is San Biase, only town of the municipality to be
over a thousand years of documented life is a parchment of 993 leading
back to the foundation. His
story, however, that around the year 732 Armenian families came here
during their journey to Rome with the mortal remains of St. Biagio who
is dedicated to the church that houses paintings of great artistic
significance dating back to the fourteenth century.
Petrosa,
with Metoio, is the last resort, in time, a fraction with a high decree
of President of the Republic, dating back to 1959, exactly 40 years
after the reclamation of land on which now stands Petrosa, once belonged
to the badia di Pattano.
