Monteu Roero
The town of Monteu Roero
is part of the lands which are called Roero because they are related to
the homonymous family asti that rich to coat and Finance, characterized
the politics and economics of the Middle Ages in the territories
included between the hills of the left bank of
the river Tanaro. Even today the confines
of this micro-region are determined by an imperial document that uses
the distant year of 901. The feud Monteu Roero
passed by inheritance to several generations of families Biandrate and
Roero, until, July 3, 1784, was given to Vittorio Amedeo III.
The landscape of the
municipality of Monteu Roero, the more fragmented the whole area,
quickly switch the primitive beauty of the rocks, the colors of the
forest and winding rows of vines that decorate the sunny hillside
offering the visitor scenic views and glimpses magnificent.
The municipal entity, in
close collaboration with the Tourism Department, the Department of the
school, the Civil Defence Volunteers Montecautese Group and producers of
typical products, has completed the restoration of ancient routes that
from the heart of the village wind through the "path"
to reach the rocks, farms and churches that dot the Roero. 6 In particular, the
"trails" already passable by hikers and horseback or mountain bike: the
path of "Grande Rocca", the path of the woods and lake Valunga; the path of
Levante and Arneis;
the path of the "Fossa dei Cinghiali"
and the great path "S.1" between Bra and Cisterna d'Asti; path "Castagna
Granda". In particular, the last
in chronological order to be reopened is precisely the path of Chestnut
Granda departs from the main square of Monteu to continue on the road
first of chestnut and then descend into the valley between Monteu
and Montaldo and up to the shade of a chestnut over 400 of
life, which seems to be the oldest specimen of the species across
Europe. Each trail the visitor
many opportunities to wonder environments and landscapes are truly
unique, finding time to time: ancient churches, like St. Pietro in Novelle,
custodians of important works of art, buildings suspended between
history and legend, as the Castle Monteu stayed
where in 1167 Frederico I of Svevia better known as Frederico the
Barbarossa, woods of chestnut and oak trees where some scholars believe
is still hidden treasure, booty of some Spaniards retreating from
Monferrato fortresses, whose wildness feeding suggestions and
legends related to their creation by Belzebù and acquaintances of
witches, although in reality it is an incredible erosion, paradise for
naturalists and geologists, the native vines of Arneis, Barbera and
Nebbiolo, from which born of the DOC and DOCG
valuable productions of the historical cellars of the Roero.
The hyphen between the
landscape, the land and its fruits is the festival "Il Ponte dei Sapori," a title metaphorically representing the two faces, the
landscape and the rural traditions of Monteu Roero by preparing the
recipes premises, during the year
preceding the upcoming harvest, the end of August. Early clusters of Arne
and the first "Castagne della Madonna" decorate tables laid with dishes that
radiate scents and tastes very authentic and inviting.
The event, already
presented in other municipalities in the Roero is flanked by the "Vineria del Ponte dei Sapori" with proposals for simple dishes and good-based products
combined with selected wines served by the same manufacturer, in an
atmosphere of jovial conviviality.
